There are some guidelines you can use to ensure that your meeting runs smoothly and efficiently, regardless of whether you’re having a meeting in person in your boardroom or a meeting online from your couch.
Punctuality, preparation and starting on time are excellent ways to get started. Make sure the board members have everything they require prior to the meeting. A well-written agenda, clear and concise distribution in advance can help keep the meeting focused.
Don’t waste time on reports. Long reports could quickly overwhelm the board’s discussions. Review reports of the leadership committee and committee only if you are required to make decisions or supervise the board. The rest of the work can be done via email or smaller meetings.
Be careful when discussing product features and roadmaps. The direction of a business shouldn’t be determined by what a CEO believes the market wants. Make sure you know why you’re taking specific steps view whenever you must discuss the product. This will keep you on the right track and prevent the “Enron effect” in which boards are too hands-off not to be able to spot problems that are developing underneath the surface.
